An exquisite egg sells for £7000 just in time for Easter

At any time of year our website is a treasure trove of unusual and desirable lots to hunt through – especially so during spring though it seems! As the time comes for hunting eggs, imagine an Easter trail ending with a star prize of a £7,000 golden egg. Halls Fine Art Auctioneers provided the winning Easy Live Auction bidder just that opportunity during their Fine Art, Antiques and Jewellery Auction on 6th March.

Lot 24 was a highly collectable limited edition Fabergé surprise egg. Crafted in 18ct yellow gold and decorated with a gold and diamond-set bee and enamel and Citrine flowers, the egg was one of their top lots. The “Honey Egg” opens to reveal an intricate gold bear eating honey from a white gold beehive, and is mounted on a smoky quartz base making it a charming addition to any collection.

Fabergé Price Guide

Fabergé  eggs have a long history of achieving the highest hammer prices, some reaching millions of pounds. Historically Fabergé  eggs were gifted to Russian Tsars and Tsarinas and therefore attract high profile collectors and can even be considered a status symbol to display in the home. Fabergé surprise eggs produced by Victor Meyer have featured on the Easy Live Auction website before. An onyx ruby and diamond elephant egg and a pink sapphire, diamond and pearl decorated swan egg sold for £6,000 each last year.

A Significant Saving on Surcharges

In this particular sale, the winning bidder purchased the golden egg using our flat fee registration option, paying £3 to enter the sale and saving over £250 on internet fees, leaving the bidder more money in their budget to spend at the auction.

The Honey Egg was one of just 75 produced, and was offered for sale with its original case and certificate of authenticity. Hallmarked Edinburgh 2003, the egg was among a host of other gold items including an emerald and diamond ring that sold for £10,000 with an Easy Live Auction customer as the under bidder.

Maryanne Lineker-Mobberley, Associate Director of Fine Art at Halls told us: “We were thrilled with our recent result for the 18ct gold and enamel Fabergé  Surprise egg we sold in March. Fabergé  pieces, a name synonymous with luxury, always perform well on the auction market with this charming piece being no exception. It was one of over 200 lots of fine art, antiques and jewellery that we offered for sale and some fantastic results were achieved across the board.”
